The organic matter from the solid urban waste biodegrades in the final disposal basins, creating biogas with a high methane (CH4) content as a by-product, which has a heating power which allows it to be used to generate thermal processes and electrical energy.
This process is doubly beneficial since by burning the methane, a dangerous greenhouse gas (GHG) with a polluting power 25 times greater than CO2 is removed.
Fermenting the organic waste in the basins in an anaerobic context generates biogas, the main component of which is methane. This biogas is channelled to the aspirators through extraction wells, distribution stations and pipes. Later it undergoes a cooling, drying and filtering process which allows its proper combustion.
In a later stage, the biogas is mixed with oxygen and injected into internal combustion engines, which are attached to alternators which generate electricity to be discharged to the network.
As part of the technological environmental solutions from GASGREEN S.A., this project provides cities with a major benefit because it prevents the emission of methane gas into the atmosphere and improves society’s quality of life.
